As the largest national economy in Europe and the third largest exporter in the world, Germany is a true heavyweight of global trade. A founding member of the EU and the Eurozone, German influence is far reaching and crucial to the continued growth of the single market. Thanks to its highly qualified labour force, developed infrastructure, low levels of corruption and high levels of innovation, Germany is a driving force behind the development of a strong European Union.

As with most developed countries, Germany’s top exports lie within the industrial, manufacturing, and service sectors. Leading German manufacturers in these sectors include Volkswagen, Daimler, Siemens, BASF and Allianz – with vehicles, machines, electronic equipment and pharmaceuticals constituting Germany’s largest exports. Top German imports include machinery, data processing equipment, vehicles, chemical, oil and gas.

Germany’s contribution to European trade is crucial to the continued success of the single European market. German exports and German imports, to and from the European Union, stand at well over 50% – helping to stimulate growth both nationally and throughout the wider economic area. The Eurozone has also benefited German manufacturers, German suppliers, and German distributors, bringing significant growth through the benefits of the shared currency.

Analysis and Inquiry – GED and the German Economy

The Global Economic Dynamics project (GED) aims to bring clarity to complex economic issues and debates by providing insightful commentary on current affairs. By encouraging thoughtful analysis and inquiry relating to the importance of German exports, imports and the economy as a whole, GED aims to promote greater understanding of global economics and Germany’s place within it.

Our studies, such as those highlighting Germany’s export surplus, contextualise Germany’s macroeconomic and microeconomic role within Europe and the world. Additionally, we also address the wider implications of economic development and the challenges faced by all nations.
